Our cattle business

Good cattle.
Well managed.

Commercial cattle production is at the heart of what we do.

R.G. Wagland Cattle Co runs cattle across grazing properties in Western Sydney. We bring together practical farming experience and a background in animal science to manage livestock, pasture and feed through the seasons.

From buying and growing cattle through to sale, our focus is the everyday work that supports a productive cattle operation.

Our approach

Working with developers & landowners

Cattle production.
On land in transition.

Practical experience on rezoned land and properties held for future development.

We work with developers and corporate landowners to run commercial cattle operations within the agreed use of each property. Our team’s grazing experience spans Bringelly and Badgerys Creek, including rezoned land within the Western Sydney Aerotropolis.

We understand that access requirements, available grazing areas and project timetables can change. Clear arrangements and regular communication help keep the cattle operation aligned with the owner’s plans.

01

A workable grazing plan

Assess pasture, water and infrastructure, then agree the grazing areas, stocking approach, fencing and feeding needed for a workable cattle operation.

02

Coordinating site access

Agree boundaries, inductions and safe-work procedures before mobilisation. Coordinate gates, contractor access and work areas to keep cattle operations aligned with site activity.

03

Planning for handover

Plan stock relocation and staged handbacks as development progresses, with property reports and clear communication about changing grazing areas and outstanding work.

Compliance & record keeping

The work on the ground.
The records behind it.

A clear account of the cattle, the property and the work carried out.

Our approach brings together livestock records, source documents and property reporting. Movement and stock records are checked against supporting evidence, with corrections and outstanding actions kept visible.

01

Cattle movements & NLIS

Animal electronic IDs, movement dates, headcounts and from/to property identification codes (PICs), supported by NVD/eNVD documents. Purchases, sales and transfers between properties are tracked, with NLIS transfer results checked separately from farm software entries.

02

LLS returns & property history

Stock numbers, property stays and land-use records to support Local Land Services Annual Land and Stock Returns. Reporting responsibilities and evidence of lodgement are agreed for each holding.

03

Livestock health & feeding

Weights, animal treatments, withholding periods and feed records connect day-to-day cattle care with the history of each animal or mob.

04

Weed control & land care

Weed inspections and treatment areas, with records of mechanical work or chemical applications. Product, rate, operator, conditions and follow-up checks provide a record of what was done and where.

05

Inspections & maintenance

Dated property observations, photographs, fence and water checks, maintenance and incident records. Actions are assigned and followed through to completion.

06

Owner reporting & supporting evidence

Property reporting brings together cattle activity, work completed and issues needing attention. Source documents, amendments and open items are retained, with the reporting scope and frequency agreed with the landowner.

For each property, we agree the operating scope, site requirements and reporting responsibilities before work begins.

How we work

In the paddock.
Through the seasons.

Good livestock management starts with knowing the cattle and the country. We pay attention to both.

01Grazing & nutrition

Matching cattle to available pasture, water and seasonal conditions, with supplementary feeding when it is needed.

02Animal health & welfare

Regular stock checks, attention to body condition and calm, considered handling. Animal health and welfare inform the way we work.

03Livestock & property management

Keeping track of livestock movements and performance, alongside the practical upkeep of fences, yards and water infrastructure.

Experience behind the operation

Farming experience.
A grounding in science.

A family connection to cattle, with a practical approach to the work in front of us.

Our family farming background includes Happy Valley Angus at Glen Innes. R.G. Wagland Cattle Co brings that connection to cattle into our commercial operations in Western Sydney.

Director Dr Matthew Van der Saag holds a Bachelor of Animal and Veterinary Bioscience and a PhD in Veterinary Science from the University of Sydney. His background in animal production supports a considered approach to livestock management.

The operation also draws on Dr Dominique Van der Saag’s animal welfare and staff-training expertise, and Martin Van der Saag CA’s experience in compliance, record keeping and business systems.
